Application
Iron(II) fumarate, with a purity of 97%, serves primarily as an iron supplement to address iron deficiency and anemia. This odorless reddish-orange to reddish-brown powder is notable for its high bioavailability, enabling effective absorption in the body. Although it is commonly used as an affordable substitute for other iron forms, recent studies have highlighted its higher potential for adverse reactions like gastrointestinal discomfort compared to alternatives. Despite this, its successful application in treating anemia with minimal side effects is well-documented, especially when paired with ascorbic acid. Iron(II) fumarate is used not only in pharmaceuticals but also as a dietary supplement in enriched foods and is particularly advantageous in formulations where its color can be effectively masked. Furthermore, it plays a role as an iron source in foods, animal feed, and infant formulas, accounting for approximately 33% iron content.
