Its utility extends to synthetic chemistry, where it acts as a precursor for phosphine-ligated gold(I) complexes, which function as catalysts. Gold(I) chloride is also crucial in preparing metallic gold as well as potassium auric bromide and potassium chloride. The compound's structure is monoclinic, and while it sublimes at high temperatures, it must be handled with care due to its thermal decomposition properties. It is slightly soluble in cold water but dissolves in hydrochloric and hydrobromic acids, as well as alkali cyanide solutions.
