Primarily, it is used as a counterstain to haematoxylin in the widely adopted H&E (haematoxylin and eosin) staining technique, one of the most common methods for examining tissue samples. This brownish-red powder effectively stains cellular structures such as muscle fibers, cytoplasm, and collagen, highlighting them for detailed microscopic analysis. Additionally, Eosin Y plays a crucial role in biochemical applications; it modulates the activity of Mg2+-ATPase by altering its affinity for ATP and Mg2+ at specific concentrations, with noted effects at levels ranging from 10 to 50 µM and changes observed near 100 µM. Beyond its staining and enzyme interaction capabilities, the compound functions as a photosensitizer, facilitating visible-light-driven electron-transfer reactions as a molecular photoelectrode. Eosin Y also enhances fluorescent quenching properties by forming complexes with polyvinylpyrrolidone, thus expanding its utility across various scientific disciplines.
