Application
Copper formate is a versatile compound primarily used for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, specifically to control bacteria and mildew in cellulosic materials. It can exist in three forms: blue powder, turquoise crystals, or royal blue crystals, depending on the crystallization process from anhydrous solutions. Notably, its royal blue form is obtained from solutions between 75-85°C, while a metastable dihydrate forms at 50-60°C and a tetrahydrate at even lower temperatures. As a water-soluble basic salt, copper formate dissolves in water to produce solutions with pH levels greater than 7.0, indicating its basic nature. These solutions can neutralize acids, releasing moderate heat during this process. Although it typically does not act as an oxidizing or reducing agent, such chemical behaviors are possible under specific conditions.
