Application
Cobalt(II) sulfate heptahydrate is characterized by its pink to red crystals and serves as a reliable, non-flammable, and stable source of water-soluble cobalt, maintaining its integrity better than chloride or nitrate forms due to its reduced tendency to deliquesce or dehydrate. This compound is used primarily in storage batteries, cobalt electroplating baths, and as a drying agent for lithographic inks and varnishes. Its applications extend to the ceramics and enamel industries, where it helps prevent discoloration in glazes, and in the manufacturing of cobalt pigments for decorating porcelain. Additionally, it plays a role in preparing pigments and various cobalt salts, is used in sympathetic inks, and acts as a supplement in soil and animal feeds. Notably, it exists as either pink to red monoclinic prismatic crystals or red granular solids, and it becomes anhydrous at high temperatures. Highly water-soluble with an acidic solution, cobalt(II) sulfate heptahydrate may also facilitate organic reactions due to its catalytic properties, although it does not strongly react as an oxidizing or reducing agent.
