cis-Dichlorobis(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II), a dark green to black powder, serves a critical role in the synthesis of various ruthenium complexes. Notably, it facilitates the modification of gold nanoparticle surfaces for the detection of cysteine through selective luminescence. Beyond this, it is instrumental in creating ruthenium complexes aimed at designing photochromic molecular switches and forming self-assembling supramolecular systems. Additionally, its hydrated form has been utilized in preparing [Ru(2,2'-bipyridine)3]2+(PF6-)2 and as an intermediate in developing nanocomposite junctions with gold nanoparticles.
