Application
Chromium(III) chloride hexahydrate, characterized by its greenish-black to violet deliquescent crystals, serves a multifaceted role across various industries and scientific applications. Soluble in water and ethanol, this compound is employed as a mordant and a chromium additive, as well as a reagent for trivalent chromium plating. Its versatility extends to functioning as a raw material in the production of other chromium salts and pigments. Additionally, it acts as a catalyst in organic synthesis and as an additive in intravenous solutions. In specialized chemical reactions, it serves as a source of chromium(II) for catalysts in the iodovinylation of aldehydes and facilitates the synthesis of chromium(III) complexes with tetradentate Schiff bases, as well as Cr(III)-fatty acid complexes for advanced compound formulations. Furthermore, when combined with choline chloride as a deep eutectic solvent, it catalyzes the esterification of formic and acetic acid with alcohols, illustrating its broad utility in chemical synthesis and industrial processes.
