Application
Chromium(0) hexacarbonyl serves multiple significant purposes, most notably as a volatile, air-stable precursor for Chromium(0). It is extensively utilized in thin film deposition techniques such as Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), where thin films can be produced at room temperature and low pressure using laser CVD. Additionally, chromium hexacarbonyl is employed as a catalyst in the polymerization and isomerization of olefins and as an additive in gasoline to increase the octane number. The compound also plays a vital role in preparing chromous oxide and is a reagent for synthesizing Fischer carbenes and arenechromium complexes. Despite its many uses, chromium hexacarbonyl is a white crystalline or granular solid that sublimes at room temperature, burns with a luminous flame, and is insoluble in water. Caution is advised due to its reactive nature, especially with chlorine, fuming nitric acid, and oxidizing agents, as it decomposes violently at 410°F.
