Application
Cerium oxide is a versatile material primarily used in the glass industry, where it serves as a polish for optical and other types of glass and can substitute tin oxide in certain instances. It plays a dual role in the production of cathode ray tubes by being an ingredient in the faceplate glass and aiding in the polishing process. Additionally, cerium oxide is capable of decolorizing glass by altering the valence state of iron within it. Beyond glass manufacturing, it is employed as a catalyst substrate and is integral to oxidizing catalyst systems in automotive applications. This material, characterized by its high monodispersity and enhanced surface reactivity, is also used in a range of advanced applications such as emissions catalysis, fuel cell electrolytes, polishing optical surfaces, semiconductor planarization, oxidation catalysis using precious metals, catalysis for water splitting in hydrogen production, and serving as a radical oxygen scavenger in biological systems.
