Application

Carbonylhydridotristriphenylphosphinerhodium(I) is a versatile catalyst used primarily for the hydrogenation and hydroformylation of alkenes. In its stable yellow crystalline form, it retains stability in air and dissolves easily in solvents like benzene, chloroform, and dichloromethane. The compound readily loses a phosphine ligand in solution, forming an active 16-electron complex. This property makes it highly effective, particularly in industrial applications such as the low-pressure oxo (LPO) process for hydroformylating alkenes, a method pioneered by companies such as Union Carbide, Davy Power Gas, and Johnson Matthey. The process efficiently operates at 25℃ and produces a notably favorable n- to iso-aldehyde ratio of approximately 20:1, outperforming traditional cobalt catalysts. Beyond these applications, it is also valuable for facilitating various chemical transformations, including hydrosilylation, isomerization, carbonylation, and oxidation.
