Application
Bismuth(III) subsalicylate is primarily used to alleviate temporary discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, including symptoms such as nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, and diarrhea. As an antacid, it also helps reduce the frequency of bowel movements, making stools firmer, and works to decrease inflammation within the intestines. The compound, appearing as a white or nearly white powder, is insoluble in water and remains stable in air, although it is light-sensitive and unstable in alkaline environments. When heated in boiling water or exposed to alkalis, it decomposes into a more basic salt. Its use extends beyond medicinal purposes, as it can provide a pearly finish to materials like cellulose-based, polystyrene, and phenol-formaldehyde resins, with a typical tap bulk density of 0.43 g/cm³.
