Bis(triphenyl-λ5-phosphanylidene)ammonium hydrogendifluoride serves as a highly efficient catalyst in sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx)-based AA-BB polycondensation reactions, as developed by K. Barry Sharpless and his team. This innovative catalyst facilitates the creation of polysulfonates, offering diverse structural possibilities, narrow polydispersity, and outstanding thermal and hydrolytic stability. The AA monomers, bisalkylsulfonyl fluorides, are synthesized from ethenesulfonyl fluoride and various amines or anilines, while the BB monomers, bisphenol bis(t-butyldimethylsilyl) ethers, are formed using tert-butyldimethylsilyl chloride and bisphenols. By varying these components, the resulting polymeric backbones can be tailored, including options for orthogonal side chain modifications post-polymerization, such as through CuAAC. Notably, this reaction can be scaled up, aligning with our dedication to providing greener alternatives that adhere to the principles of greener chemistry, with enhancements for catalytic efficiency.
